Preventing salary issues

Prevent sponsor licence salary breaches

Stay above the thresholds, including the ones that move without a pay change.

Sponsoro re-checks every sponsored worker's salary against the applicable threshold and occupation going rate at their actual hours, so a rota change or a reduced week never quietly becomes a breach.

Why salary is the quiet risk

A salary can fall below the requirement without anyone cutting pay.

Sponsors tend to think of salary compliance as something settled at hire: the figure cleared the threshold, so the box is ticked. In practice the sponsored salary position is a moving calculation that depends on hours, occupation code and the rates currently in force.
  • Reducing hours lowers the salary position with no change to the rate.
  • The general threshold and going rates are updated over time.
  • A role change can move the applicable occupation code and going rate.
  • Unpaid or reduced-pay absence affects the position.
  • Two requirements apply, and the higher one controls.
  • Payroll processes the change; nobody re-runs the compliance check.

The breach is rarely a decision. It is usually an arithmetic consequence of a decision nobody connected to the licence.

Where it goes wrong

The salary failures sponsors actually have

These are the specific mechanisms by which compliant salaries stop being compliant.

Hours reductions

A salary that clears the requirement at full time may not clear it at reduced hours, because the position is assessed on what is actually worked.

The wrong controlling requirement

Both the general threshold and the occupation going rate apply, and the higher of the two controls. Checking only one gives a false pass.

Stale going rates

Published rates change. A check run against an old table can show a pass where the current rate shows a shortfall.

Role changes without a re-check

A promotion or transfer can change the occupation code, and with it the applicable going rate.

Absence and unpaid leave

Periods of unpaid or reduced pay affect the salary position and can be reportable in their own right.

No record of the calculation

Being compliant is not enough if you cannot show the rate applied, the hours used and the date assessed.

How Sponsoro works

Every salary, re-checked every day.

Sponsoro assesses each sponsored worker against both requirements using their actual hours and current published rates, shows which requirement controls, and keeps the working.
  • Salary and hours read from your records
  • Occupation code and going rate identified
  • Pay pro-rated to actual working hours
  • Both requirements applied, higher one controls
  • Shortfalls and near-misses surfaced with owners
  • Calculation retained as evidence

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Which salary requirement applies to a sponsored worker?

Both the general salary threshold and the going rate for the occupation code apply, and the higher of the two controls the result. Sponsoro shows which requirement is controlling for each worker.

Does reducing hours breach the sponsored salary?

It can. The salary position is assessed against actual working hours, so a reduction can take a worker below the requirement even with no change to their rate of pay. A salary reduction is also normally reportable within 10 working days.

How do you keep going rates current?

Sponsoro applies the published going rates in force, with the source and publication date recorded, so a check can be traced back to the rates it was based on.

Can I check a single role before hiring?

Yes — the free Skilled Worker salary checker and going rate checker let you test a specific salary, occupation code and hours without an account.

Catch the shortfall before payroll does.

Sponsoro re-checks every sponsored salary daily against both requirements at actual hours, and keeps the calculation so you can prove the position.
