Why education is harder
The academic year doesn't match the compliance year.
- Timetables change at the start of each academic year, often changing FTE.
- Term-time-only contracts complicate how annual salary is assessed.
- Part-time teaching means salary must be considered against actual hours.
- Additional responsibility allowances change pay and sometimes duties.
- Staff teach across sites in multi-academy trusts and college groups.
- Compliance often sits with a business manager alongside everything else.
A timetable change is an operational decision made by a curriculum lead. It can also be a reportable change to a sponsored worker's working arrangements.
Where problems start
The duties that catch education sponsors
FTE changes at year transition
A reduction in teaching load changes working arrangements and can move the salary below the applicable requirement.
Term-time-only salary assessment
How the sponsored salary is calculated for a term-time contract needs to be documented, not assumed from the headline figure.
Responsibility allowances
Taking on a department or pastoral lead role changes duties, and may change the sponsored role position.
Site changes in trusts and groups
Teaching across more than one school or campus raises work location reporting questions.
Right to Work before term
Follow-up checks falling in a holiday period are easily missed, and a worker cannot lawfully continue without one.
Records split across systems
Single central record, HR, payroll and timetabling hold different parts of the picture, so no one holds the sponsored position.

FAQ
Questions we get asked
How is salary assessed for a term-time-only sponsored teacher?
The sponsored salary position has to reflect the actual working arrangements, including hours and weeks worked. Sponsoro assesses salary against actual hours and keeps the calculation as evidence, rather than relying on a headline annual figure.
Is reducing a sponsored teacher's timetable reportable?
A change to working arrangements or a salary reduction is normally reportable within 10 working days. A reduction in FTE typically involves both, so it should be assessed before it takes effect.
Can Sponsoro handle a multi-academy trust with several schools?
Yes. Workers, sites, evidence and reporting history are held against the licence, so the central team sees one position with detail available per school.
Does taking on a head of department role need reporting?
A change to job title, role or duties is normally reportable. Where the change is substantial, it may require more than a report, which is why the change should be assessed against the Certificate of Sponsorship.
