Why professional services is harder

Career progression is a compliance event.

Professional services firms are built around structured progression: annual promotion rounds, qualification milestones and moves between practice areas. Each of those changes a sponsored worker's role, salary or duties — and the licence notices even when the firm does not.
  • Annual promotion rounds change titles, salaries and duties at scale, on one date.
  • Client secondments and placements raise work location questions.
  • Qualification milestones change what the role requires and what it pays.
  • Moves between practice areas can change the occupation code position.
  • Partner and director changes may be key personnel changes.
  • Chargeable-hours culture leaves little room for compliance admin.

A promotion round that moves thirty people is thirty potential reportable changes landing in the same fortnight.

Where problems start

The duties that catch professional services firms

These are the areas where firms most often discover a gap between the sponsored position and the current reality.

Promotion-driven role change

A new title with materially different duties may need more than a report — it can require a change of employment process.

Occupation code drift

Progression into a management or specialist role can move the position outside the occupation code on the Certificate of Sponsorship.

Client site placements

Extended work at a client location raises work location and sometimes third-party arrangement questions.

Salary reductions on flexible working

A move to reduced hours or a sabbatical changes the salary position and is reportable.

Key personnel changes

Partner rotations and management changes can change who holds sponsor licence roles, which is reportable within 20 working days.

Genuine vacancy evidence

Roles created around a specific candidate's qualifications attract scrutiny, and the recruitment evidence needs to hold up years later.

How Sponsoro works

Promotion round in, compliance actions out.

Sponsoro assesses each change against the current rules and the worker's sponsored position, so a promotion cycle produces a clear list of what needs reporting and what needs a deeper review.
  • Role, salary or location change captured
  • Sponsored position compared against the change
  • Occupation code and going rate re-checked
  • Report-only or full review determined
  • Deadline calculated, owner assigned
  • Evidence retained against the decision

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Is a promotion reportable for a sponsored worker?

A change of job title, role or duties is normally reportable within 10 working days. Where the change is significant enough that the worker is effectively doing a different job, a change of employment process may be required instead of a report alone.

Can a sponsored consultant work at a client site?

It depends on the arrangement. Extended work at a client location raises work location reporting questions, and some third-party arrangements are treated differently under the guidance. The arrangement should be assessed rather than assumed.

Do partner changes need reporting?

If a change affects who holds a key personnel role on the licence — Authorising Officer, Key Contact or Level 1 User — it is normally reportable within 20 working days.

How does Sponsoro handle a whole promotion round at once?

Changes are assessed per worker against their sponsored position, then presented as a single list of required actions with deadlines and owners, rather than as thirty separate manual reviews.

Let progression happen without licence risk.

Sponsoro checks every sponsored worker's role, salary and location against their Certificate of Sponsorship continuously, and tells you what each change requires.
